| The Institute of Animal Science (IAS), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) was established in 1957. It is a national multi-discipline research organization in the field of animal science. There are currently 161 staff members at the institute, among whom 131 are scientists and technicians, including 1 academician of the Chinese Engineering Academy, 15 professors, 40 associate professors and 19 doctor degree holders. IAS/CAAS covers a total area of 545 mu (37 ha) with a total floor space of 60,000 m2 of buildings and houses and an experimental farm located 25 km north to the institute, where the Livestock Branch of the State Changping Integrated Research Center of Agro-Engineering and Technology is located. The laboratories of the Institute are equipped whith sophisticated and valuable equipment and instruments and the library has a collection of 35,000 volumes of monographs and 500 different periodical titles of both Chinese and English languages. The Institute sets up 5 research divisions: Animal Nutrition and Feed Science, Animal Genetics and Germplasm Resources, Animal Breeding and Production, Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology, and Grassland and Feed Crops in addition to a Central Laboratory for chemical analysis and a Key Laboratory for Animal Nutrition under the Ministry of Agriculture. There are also 5 administrative departments, namely: General Administration Office, Department for Project Planning and Manangement, Department ofr Scientific and Technological Development and Extension, Department of Personnel and Experimental Farm Management, and a General Rear-Service Center.
